Wildlife

This page is dedicated to a tiny proportion of the local wildlife mainly from, in and around our garden.  Photos taken by ourselves; with some contributions from our guests; using only phones, standard cameras or wildlife cameras … nature at its very best

Birds:

Obviously I will start with “our” owls. I found my first fallen fledgling back in 2015, and from then on I have been in love.  We are so fortunate to be able to say that since then, we have had a nesting pair, raising between 2 and 4 owlets successfully, each year.

The predatory birds are magnificent to watch; they are frequently seen over the gardens and the woodland. The following 4 photos are from guest : Tim Baker

Living in the countryside there are always sounds you don’t recognise, for me the Merlin Bird ID app is an absolutely fantastic tool to help identify who is singing so eloquently in the hedges.

We are fortunate enough to be on the route of the migrating cranes / grues : around every October and March thousands can be seen and heard as they fly south for winter or north for summer.  Their loud ‘trumpeting’ calls preceded them, as they jostle to organise themselves into perfectly streamlined ‘V’ shapes.

Animals:

We try to walk every day around 16h / 17h; always hoping to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.  Sometimes we are treated with deer playing in fields; other-times we are equally enamored with the livestock that regularly ‘shimmy’ under the single wire fences or trot up to see us as we pass.

Insects:

This section is dedicated to all those insects that are both beautiful and fascinating (I do adore butterflies / moths and bees!)

Amphibians:

… from those that bask in the sunshine, to those that hide under rocks:
